You've never seen food challenges like this. The Trash Walker Anna Sacks works at a waste reduction consultancy firm. In her free time, she sorts through garbage at CVS locations in Manhattan
Sacks: I do this— I try going as frequently as I can. I try at least 3 times a week. Sometimes I'll be walking and I'll go out of my way to walk by a CVS and see what they have going on.
Sacks has written a petition on Change.org to demand CVS change its waste policies It has more than 230,000 signatures. The petition specifically asks CVS to donate to local shelters and churches and to allow employees to take unused product home.
Sacks: The #donatedontdump hashtag is the campaign to tell CVS, you have these goods you don't want, the solution is not to dump it in the trash, the solution is to donate. They should donate the toothpaste, donate the bandaids, but a chocolate once and awhile is a nice thing to have.
Sacks says she has salvaged 100s of pounds of usable goods from CVS
Sacks: I found 40 bags of Lindt chocolate— they were going to expire that month. I found 42 packets of hazelnut M&Ms chocolates, that expired in 2020. They were not under recall. I found 18 boxes of tampons and pads. Each box had 30+ tampons in them so it was really massive. If you’re using a tampon, each individual tampon is wrapped in plastic. So even if the cardboard box is damaged, the tampon is still safe and hygienic to use. I found $155 worth of probiotics.
