While this has often been the case in NMMC, this present tenure of corporators is breaking previously set records of corruption by the nexus. It came to light yet again on a proposal tabled in this week’s general body meeting. The proposal was to convert the walkway connecting Fr. Agnel Rozario Road in Sector 9A to Jambhul Marg Vashi into a culvert & connecting road at a cost of Rs. 86 lacs 71 thousand 448. This is the same walkway that connects to the Sacred Heart Church Vashi. Voicing strong objections on this, corporator Divya Gaikwad questioned NMMC administration’s decision to float the proposal without consulting citizens of the area, members of the church and even her as corporator of the ward.
Pointing out to the apathy of the administration to have proposed this she said that, on Sundays the walkway witnesses thousands of church goers while the area is also frequented by students of the nearby colleges. On top of this; even the environment destruction has not been not evaluated.
Divya Gaikwad said that even traffic flow wasn’t studied asserting that the new road could make the area accident prone. She pointed out that breaking the walkway will create major hurdles for senior citizens and youth.
She added that some students also avail the peace of the area to sit and study there and demanded the proposal be rejected.
Convinced by the flaws and drawbacks brought on record by Divya Gaikwad, the NMMC Commissioner Annasaheb Misal withdrew the proposal.
