Just when you start to feel comfortable in your own home, here we come to ruin the day. We’ve compiled a list of items you probably have in your house—items that may be working against you. This is Most Dangerous Household Objects!

6. Wood Stoves
We get it; we like the rustic, old-time charm that having a wood stove offers, but did you know that they might not be the best to have around as far as your health goes? That’s because, if they’re at all improperly ventilated, they could put you at risk for carbon monoxide poisoning and house fires, which nobody needs. Exposure to wood smoke is also a potential risk factor for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma, at least according to the American Lung Association. So, if you’ve got one, get your ventilation checked, and if you’re thinking about getting one, consider if it’s worth asthma or death!

5. Furnace
We know that the furnaces in our homes can be a significant safety concern, but we often don’t even remember it’s there when it’s tucked away in the basement or inside a closet. As long as you keep yours well-maintained and serviced, you and your family should be just fine. But, if you don’t, you could be putting you and yours at risk, as furnaces fairly often cause carbon monoxide poisoning and deadly gas leaks, as well as the obvious fires. Get your furnace looked at; you know it’s been some time since yours has been checked out—if it ever has been!

4. Air Conditioner
We’re going to take this the other direction now and talk about humankind’s saving grace in the summer: air conditioning. Did you know that faulty air conditioners are responsible for a ton of fires—in just 2010, defective air conditioning units sparked 7,400 fires, took 29 lives and caused an obscene amount of property damage? Not only that, if you install a unit in a window, or have a unit installed in a window, and don’t make sure it’s in properly, it could fall and seriously injure people and/or end lives. We bet you didn’t even think of that one, did you?

3. Non-Stick Cooking Implements
You know your handy non-stick pots and pans that you love? Well, did you have any idea that they may be doing you harm every single time you use them? Sadly, it’s true, as many older pots and pans made use of PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid), which was once used in the making of Teflon. Luckily, Teflon is now made without PFOA and has been since 2013! So, if you’ve been holding onto your pots and pans, now might be the time to invest in some new ones, as PFOA may be linked to several types of cancers. It may also adversely affect the thyroid, immune system, and liver, and might lead to spikes in cholesterol, as well as cause problems for developing babies.

2. Batteries
Yes, the little electrical devices that power your remotes, digital cameras, and children’s toys can be dangerous if you don’t take care to ensure they remain in reasonably good shape. When it comes to batteries, there are typically four main dangers, which include the weight and density of the battery, electrical shock, flammable gases contained inside, and obviously battery acid. They can also prove fatal if you were to ingest them, so don’t, and yet again—keep out of the reach of children! We all know a kid that would eat a battery.
