Whaley Bridge: 'There is still a substantial threat to life'

Whaley Bridge: 'There is still a substantial threat to life' The Prime Minister arrived in Derbyshire in a helicopter tonight to speak to panicked evacuees and rescue teams as they scramble to save the Toddbrook Reservoir, 24 hours after its walls began to burst. Mr Johnson met a number of families affected by the evacuation at Whaley Bridge, telling them he had flown over the dam twice and it was 'dodgy but stable'. He said: 'I flew over the dam and it looks pretty scary. I can see the problem'. He assured residents 'you will all be properly housed' if the dam burst, but told a group of police officers 'let's hope it doesn't happen'. Thousands of residents were evacuated yesterday over fears the dam could burst any minute and allow millions of tonnes of water to pour through and lay waste to the entire town. Earlier today, a Royal Air Force Chinook helicopter hovered over the reservoir and dropped dozens of sandbags in an attempt to seal its damaged walls (inset).
