China has lodged a case against the United States with the World Trade Organization over U.S. import duties. The Chinese commerce ministry says the latest tariffs hikes violate the consensus reached by leaders of China and the U.S. in late June. The ministry says China will firmly defend its legal rights under WTO rules. It says it is taking action to protect the multilateral trading system. The United States began imposing 15-percent additional tariffs on a variety of Chinese goods, including footwear, smart watches and flat-panel televisions, on Sunday. China responded with new duties on U.S. products including crude oil.
