Most kids born with Cleft lip and class palette have a defect in the upper jaw as well. This bony defect can be very very large in some patients. Even if it is small, it needs to be addressed. This is done by way of bone grafting. Traditionally, this has been referred to as cleft alveolus. However we like to call it cleft maxilla as the defect is larger than just the alveolus. What we like to do here at Richardsons is out of thousands of cases of experience. We’ve also published various literature regarding the treatment. The bone is harvested from the Iliac crest. The technique used is it trephine technique. This technique provides very good quality bone with very minimal post operative pain for the patient. Recovery is very quick. The technique is very fast.
