In US news and current events today, three cheers for Diego the tortoise had so much sex he saved his entire species! Now he’s off to a well-deserved retirement. Diego has fathered approximately 800 babies.
Before he began his 44-yearlong journey of lovemaking, there were only 14 tortoises of the same species living in the wild. Diego’s species, Chelonoidis hoodensis, is one of a few species of giant tortoises native to the Galápagos. Some have already gone extinct.
Diego is approx 100 years old. He was taken from his native Española island in the 1930s and moved to the San Diego zoo for scientific research. 30+ years later, in 1976, he was brought back to the Galapagos, to Santa Cruz island, which is home to tortoise restoration breeding program. Diego got to work, and helped his species grow from 14 wild tortoises to more than 2,000. It’s estimated he’s the father of about 40% of the population.
Diego’s lovemaking skills are actually second place to another tortoise, but something about Diego has made him a media star.
