Penny Junor, who has written extensively about the royal family, had sought to deny that the ’s reception of Meghan Markle had been racist. She told CBS This Morning: ‘The overweening sentiment of the British public was to be enthusiastic about Meghan, to welcome her. She came into the royal family and because she was of colour, it made a whole lot of coloured people in our country suddenly find that the monarchy was relevant for them. ‘I really hope we don’t lose them.’ Ms Junor, 70, told interviewers: ‘I don’t believe race is a factor. I’m sorry, I really don’t. ‘Of course there are some idiots around, and some racists around. We all know that. We took her to our hearts. The British were thrilled about her marrying into the royal family. ‘They were thrilled because she was mixed race. That was a real plus. ‘There are many people in this country who are black, who are of colour, who feel that they are in a racist society. Equally there are other people who are also of colour who do not feel they’re in a racist society.’ Ms Junor faced a backlash for her comments from many who picked up on the phrase ‘coloured people’ and claimed this was an example of the kind of racist atmosphere Meghan had to contend with. One Twitter user said: ‘She even managed to let out “coloured people.” Who says that in 2020?’ Another said: ‘You can’t deny racism is involved and also say “coloured people”, Penny. That’s literal racism.’ And another added: ‘If this is how people think, Meghan was experiencing way more than what we’ve been seeing. ‘How tone deaf is this woman? “She’s sensitive, we love her, having a colored girl is good for us??” Seriously… They have to leave.’ The interview came after Harry and Meghan announced they wanted to ‘step back’ as senior members of the royal family. After a crisis meeting with the Queen at Sandringham yesterday, it was decided that the couple would spend a ‘period of transition’ living between the and Canada, while questions about their future funding and status were decided.
