Overall, the value of exported electrical energy increased by an average 4% for all exporting countries since 2014 when electricity shipments were valued at $32.9 billion. Year over year, exported electricity appreciated by 13.8% from 2017 to 2018.

Among continents, Europe sold the highest dollar worth of exported electricity during 2018 with shipments valued at $23.5 billion or more than two-thirds (68.6%) of the global total. In second place were Asian exporters at 11.7% while 8.4% of worldwide electrical energy shipments originated from North America. Smaller percentages came from electricity suppliers in Latin America (7.2%) excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean, and Africa (4.2%).

France: US$4.2 billion (12.2% of total electricity exports)
Germany: $3.8 billion (11%)
Canada: $2.3 billion (6.6%)
Switzerland: $2.1 billion (6.2%)
Paraguay: $2.1 billion (6.2%)
Sweden: $1.6 billion (4.6%)
Czech Republic: $1.5 billion (4.5%)
China: $1.5 billion (4.4%)
Laos: $1.4 billion (4.1%)
Austria: $1.1 billion (3.2%)
Norway: $963.2 million (2.8%)
Russia: $808.9 million (2.4%)
Slovenia: $777.8 million (2.3%)
Spain: $772.2 million (2.3%)
Hungary: $754.6 million (2.2%).
