Warding Off Jack Frost With The Hot Toddy from 1781

Warding Off Jack Frost With The Hot Toddy from 1781 Tomorrow is National Hot Toddy Day so we thought it was the perfect time to explore this winter staple.

Ask anyone if they know what a Hot Toddy is and the answer will likely be yes, ask them hot to make a Hot Toddy and you'll most probably get a variety of answers. Although we don't know exactly how old the Hot Toddy is, we do know that it is a very very old drink which predates the cocktail by at least a hundred years. It was used as a medicinal drink at first, around before people were drinking for pleasure which accounts for why everyone has their own recipe. It is most often made with just about any spirit, hot water, spices cider and usually lemon. Here's what we do know: The drink emerges in publication by the 1700's. It is most commonly believed to have emerged in Scotland and although nobody know why it is called a Hot Toddy there are a few theories the first is a poem by a poet named Allen Ramsay titled "The Morning Interview" published in 1781 which references tea made from water of the "Todian Spring" The Todian Spring was the main water source in Edinburgh. Another likely theory is that the British who were doing trade with India at the time encountered a drink which was hot, alcoholic and contained palm tree sap which the british then turned into the Hot Toddy. Wherever it actually comes from, it is a standard classic which everyone should know and is arguably the first drink in it's own category. So drink up and stay warm!
