Confidence is based off ability, and as such, can be diminished by failure or competition.
You can’t have confidence with anything outside your comfort zone. By definition you can’t be confident at it because you don’t have the experience.
Assurance on the other hand is the understanding that you’ll be okay. Either you’ll grow and be able to complete the task, you’ll learn something from “failure” (however you define it), or you as a person will be okay even if you don’t succeed.
Confidence is based in your ego, your ability to get things done. Assurance is based in separating yourself from your immediate results.
Think about someone you care about, you’d want to reassure them when they’re nervous, or feeling defeated, or unsure of themselves. You’d want to give them the comfort and security of knowing they can excel despite setbacks!
Unlike confidence, which can be dented and destroyed, assurance is more resilient.
