Residents wade through waist-high floods in New South Wales, Australia, this afternoon (Feb 7). Roads in the city of Gosford were submerged at around 6pm local time after hours of torrential rain.
Resident Angus Lumby said he was driving to a friend's house but had to abandon his car and wade through the road after the rain ''turned it into a river''.
''We were flooded in and had to walk through, then my brother met us at the other side or the road with our car,'' he said.
The downpours were a welcome relief to the region, which has been ravaged by severe bush fires in recent weeks. Officials said the rain had extinguished a third of the fires in the area and could put more out.
Sydney recorded its wettest day in more 15 months with many locals celebrating the downpour despite the inconvenience.
