Fortify Rights on ABC News - Rohingya Refugees' Relocation Plan to Bhasan Char Island | Plans to move #Rohingya refugees to a flood-prone island in Bangladesh raise further questions |

Fortify Rights Senior Human Rights Specialist John Quinley III told ABC News of growing concerns about the rights and protection of Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh.

The government announced plans to relocate refugees from camps in Cox’s Bazar to Bhasan Char, an isolated and flood-prone island in the Bay of Bengal in October 2019.

International organizations urged the government to conduct meaningful consultation with Rohingya refugees and allow the United Nations technical assessment of the island.

Fortify Rights found Rohingya who did not know their names were on the relocation list, and they had not been consulted or informed about the plan.

“[Rohingya refugees] expressed fear, shock, and uncertainty about the reality of potentially being relocated. All of them that we interviewed told us that they were unwilling to go to the island at this time and that they were not consulted about the process,” John Quinley III said.
