***Submit Your Comments On The Proposal To The FAA:
Today I'm talking about the "Remote Identification of Unmanned Aircraft Systems," proposal that the FAA is working on. The comment period is coming to a close soon, and if you're a drone enthusiast I hope you'll take the time to submit your comments to the FAA.
While I do support a remote identification system for drones, I do not support the current proposal from the FAA. I'm perfectly fine with the FAA tracking my drone, the DOT, or Law Enforcement. I'm not okay with a plan that proposes to make my real time flight data available to the general public. Not only is that an invasion of my privacy while working on a job site, it could be a threat to my own well being while working the site. Letting the authorities track my drone usage is something I'm okay with, making all of my flight data available to the general public is not okay.
There's more in the proposal than just this single security issue. Additional costs and fees to submit our data real time will be cost prohibitive to smaller drone operations. Limitations on flight in areas with no Internet will be hard on pilots working in remote locations for raw land sites. In the end, I feel that the small drone operators will be gutted by this proposal, leaving the usage of drones in the hands of larger corporations and barring small drone businesses from entry into the market.
