At cancer benefit, Renee Zellweger said real life hit the day after her Oscar win

At cancer benefit, Renee Zellweger said real life hit the day after her Oscar win (28 Feb 2020) AT CANCER BENEFIT, RENEE ZELLWEGER SAID REAL LIFE HIT THE DAY AFTER HER OSCAR WIN

Oscar winner Renee Zellweger says reality hit the very day after the recent Academy Awards, as rather than relishing her best actress win for "Judy," the pet-owner was rushing up to a vetenary hospital.

"I run straight up the highway to see the dogs at the hospital, they're recovering from some surgeries, you know, the day after. And got a little cold as you do, because everybody's getting it these days. So that's pretty real isn't it," she laughed, Thursday (27 JANUARY 2020).

Zellweger was honored Thursday night by the Women's Cancer Research Fund with the 2020 courage award, at a benefit called an Unforgettable Evening.

"It's really about celebrating the work of the organization and the courage of the ladies who benefit from the advances in the science that this organization funds," she said.

Cancer survivor Rita Wilson is one of the organization's honorary chairs. About five years ago, she was diagnosed with invasive lobular carcinoma, a form of breast cancer located in the tissue's milk-producing glands. She said her diagnosis was terrifying but felt lucky she learned a life lesson from the experience.

"One of those gifts is that you live a life full out and you really want to celebrate every single day and it's something you just don't take for granted," she smiled."This every day of your life becomes a thing that you are so grateful for. I wake up every morning, I say my prayers and I thank God for my health and that I'm here and that I get to be at this event tonight raising money and hopefully finding a cure one day."

Actress Maria Bello is happily engaged to French chef Dominique Crenn. But she says that just one year ago, their lives were very different - Crenn didn't know she had cancer and they didn't know they were in love.

"Going through cancer together is a lot. You learn a lot how people roll through the world. And I like the way she rolls. I like the way she dances through the world," Bello said about Crenn. "She was smiling even when she was like 16 chemo treatments in."

Former doctor Ken Jeong - whose wife Tran Ho is also a breast cancer survivor - was the night's host.

Jeong gave his medical option on the viral outbreak which has infected 83,000 globally since it began in China, and suggested ways people can stay safe.

"Steps of universal precautions, handwashing, just trying to use as much common sense as much as possible. And those are important things where there's coronavirus, whether it's influenza, whether it's a simple common cold," he said. "If I were still practicing, I would advise a patient to think of the big picture, think of not just coronavirus, but all spectrum of communicable diseases and play defense from that standpoint."

The World Health Organization has named the illness COVID-19, referring to its origin late last year and the coronavirus that causes it.

The virus has caused 2,800 deaths globally. In China,  the government's health authority has reported 2,788 deaths among 78,824 cases, mostly in the central province of Hubei.

The latest global figures, reported by each government's health authority as of Friday, include 60 cases in the U.S.

Tom Ford, Martin Short, Paris Hilton and her sister Nicky Hilton Rothschild were also in attendance at the Unforgettable Evening benefit, where the Jonas Brothers performed for guests.
