Does a 'No Cash Bail' Policy Pose a Danger to the Public?

Does a 'No Cash Bail' Policy Pose a Danger to the Public? State Capitol, March 2, 2020 - A coalition of law enforcement officials from across Illinois hold a press conference to state their opposition to the “no cash bail” proposals that a number of lawmakers are supporting.

The argument for the release of prisoners without posting a cash bail is that it discriminates against the very poor arrested who frequently cannot come up with the money to be released on bail. Then because they are not released, they may suffer considerable life crises, including the loss of a job they cannot go to, the lack of child care for minor children who may be left alone, when the arrested individual is a single parent.

But while law enforcement officials say these cases are real, the danger posed to the public by releasing dangerous individuals without a bail posting, is significant. In their briefing they say the impact of a “No Cash Bail” system in New York underscores their arguments.. They cite statistics that show a high increase in subsequent crime that they say was the direct result of a No Cash Bail policy instituted there.
