When choosing an insert’s edge prep, it’s important to first know the material and cutting conditions of the applications.
If cutting softer materials like aluminum, an F edge prep would be recommended. This is the sharpest and It also has the freest cutting capabilities. If you are using a shoulder mill in a long overhang application, an F is recommended to help reduce chatter.
On the other end of the scale, we have the S edge prep for harder material that might encounter severe interruptions. The S is the strongest edge prep that combines a T-land and a hone. While being the strongest, it also has higher cutting forces than an F.
