WHO: China effort stopped thousands of infections

WHO: China effort stopped thousands of infections (24 Feb 2020) The head of the World Health Organisation (WHO) group studying the new virus outbreak said on Monday that China stopped thousands of infections with their national containment efforts.

Dr. Bruce Aylward, an assistant director-general of the World Health Organization, said in Beijing on Monday that China's actions had probably prevented tens of thousands and possibly hundreds of thousands of cases.

Aylward urged other countries to follow China's example.

"What China has demonstrated is, you have to do this, and if you do it, you can save lives and you can prevent thousands of cases of what is a very difficult disease", he said.

The new virus took aim at a broadening swath of the globe on Monday, with officials in Europe and the Middle East scrambling to limit the spread of an outbreak that showed signs of stabilizing at its Chinese epicentre but posed new threats far beyond.

The number of people sickened by the virus topped 79,000 globally, and wherever it sprung up, officials rushed to try to contain it.
