In the Essence of Nectar it is said that even over the course of countless eons it is very difficult to achieve enlightenment, but due to the power of the guru you can achieve it in a brief lifetime by pleasing the guru. Like a mother who is so happy when she sees someone helping her child, all the buddhas are pleased when they see that you are correctly devoting yourself to the guru. They enter the guru whereby your offerings to the guru become an offering to all the buddhas. Rinpoche then uses the example of the life story of bodhisattva Cho Phag to illustrate that without the guru, even if you gain a lot of realizations you cannot achieve enlightenment. This is why it is extremely important to meditate on guru devotion and to not create heresy, even if the guru scolds you and does other actions that your self cherishing does not like.
