S3 Gun Violence in America | E19 A Tale of Two Cities

S3 Gun Violence in America | E19 A Tale of Two Cities In 2018, there were 68 killings in Oakland… the city’s lowest in nearly two decades… and almost 50% less than six years before.

"We did all of this stuff together, and it helped both of us to forgive the person that killed our son and also to accept our son's death. ... I know I still see my husband's teeth clench. His tradition-- he's Yoruba, he's from Nigeria, they don't bury their children. The parents don't attend the funeral services. We didn't go to the funeral home. We didn't go to the mass. We didn't go to the grave site, and we've never been, because they don't feel that parents should bury their children. Children should bury their parents," says Barbara Lafitte-Oluwole.

For Barbara, like for thousands of community members in Oakland who’d been living with the threat of gun violence, the drop in homicides… has been a big win.

"I'm very hopeful, I feel things are changing every day," she says. Learn more about Barbara and her community's work to fight #gunviolence in Oakland on S3E19 of #ISIHpodcast: insicknessandinhealthpodcast.com
