The impact assessment which was slipped out late last night by ministers disclosed “additional administrative costs” on goods moving from Britain to the Province of around £15 to £56 for each customs declaration, plus a fee of at least £47 (55 euros) on “products of animal origin”.
The admission increased levels of anger among DUP politicians whose 10 votes could be crucial.
DUP MEP Diane Dodds said: “Given that 70 per cent of all of Northern Ireland’s trade is with Great Britain this is a huge barrier to the NI economy. A separation of Northern Ireland in customs and regulation from its own internal market.”
Northern Ireland businesses would pay EU tariffs on goods used in their manufacturing processes, she said, while goods going in the opposite direction to Great Britain would be hit by customs paperwork.
