The Legend of Heroes is a long running franchise with the 'Trails' sub series that has encompassed a multi story arc story across the Zemurian Continent.

Trails of Cold Steel 3 is the eighth game Echo has tackled after having been introduced to the series through Cold Steel 1 and 2. Afterwards, he made his way through the Trails in the Sky trilogy that started it all, the Crossbell duology that came between that and the Cold Steel subseries.

Returning to the perspective to Rean some time after the end of Cold Steel 2's civil war ending, we now see a newly graduated protagonist taking up a new job as an instructor at a military academy... with much more in store from him that he expects or even likely wants.
