Butterflies, Birds, and Beaches - Day Trip on the PCH Santa Cruz to Half Moon Bay

Butterflies, Birds, and Beaches - Day Trip on the PCH Santa Cruz to Half Moon Bay To follow this year's trip check out the 2019-20 Snowbird Trip Video Playlist -

In this video, we take a day trip from Santa Cruz to Half Moon Bay on the Pacific Coast Highway. (California Highway 1) Trip highlights include footage from Natural Bridges State Beach and Pillar Point home of the famous Mavericks Beach. Maverick is renowned for its colossal surfing waves.

At Natural Bridges, we took a nature walk into a beautiful eucalyptus forest to see clusters of monarch butterflies that winter in the coastal grove — then headed out to the beach to check the arched rock. I was thrilled to see it loaded with pelicans, cormorants, and other shorebirds. Speaking of birds! All along this stretch of coast, you'll find a wide variety. We spotted many types of seabirds, hawks, falcons, songbirds, etc.

At the Pillar Point State Marine Conservation Area, I got some close-up views of what I think are Black-crowned Night Herons roosting in the trees on the ocean bluff. The video finishes with some dashcam footage of the Highway 1 drive and views from Pescadero State Beach, Pigeon Point Lighthouse, Greyhound Rock County Park, and the Santa Cruz waterfront drive.
