The Mysterious Death of the Horse Called Mr. Ed

Mr. Ed was a wonderful TV sitcom that ran on CBS in the early 60s. It starred Alan Young as Wilbur, Mr. Ed's owner and friend. There are various accounts about the passing of the horse that played Mr. Ed, Bamboo Harvester. Here are my memories as well as my best guess as to which version is most accurate.
