One of the worst things about being a human is having to deal with skin blemishes. They are often annoying, painful, and make you want to shield your face away from the world due to them not exactly being the prettiest thing to look at. Fortunately, more than not they're very easy to remedy and can often disappear within a matter of days with the proper treatment. But on the flipside, skin blemishes can also be a mere side effect as a result of a much more serious condition. This story will make you paranoid about every little blackhead or open-pore you happen to come across on your skin. You'll be poking at your skin until it becomes a swollen mess due to your overthinking.
A 32-year-old woman in Russia had a very interesting and rare case. She noticed some strange lumps on her face. Not being one to over-analyze situations and worry without cause, she decided to just leave the lumps alone as they were probably just regular old pimples. But after 2 weeks of regular skincare and taking necessary measures to help the pimples on her face go away, they were still there and didn't seem to be getting any better.
The lumps started out on her cheeks, then eventually moved beneath her left eye, and moved once again to above her left eye. The lumps ended up staying in the same place above her left eye for around 10 days. After that, the lumps seemed to move from above her left eye, to her upper lip causing it to swell.
Since they weren't around to monitor the situation over the course of the couple weeks it was happening, most of the doctor's the woman saw simply wrote it off as regular spots of irritation that are common amongst people. Luckily, the woman documented everything that was going on with her skin, keeping track of all the lumps, where they were moving, how long they stayed in a specific area, and even went as far as to take selfies showing the lumps themselves to provide further context to the situation. Rather than try to explain herself to the same doctors again, the woman decided to visit another doctor to get another opinion on the matter, and present all of the evidence she logged about her incident.
The woman chose to visit an eye doctor instead of a general skin doctor. Even though the lumps were no longer near her eyes anymore, the lumps had spent the most time near her eyes. As the doctor was busy examining her eyes and the lumps, he noticed that the lumps started to move right before his eyes. The woman wasn't at all oblivious to this happening because she herself could feel the lumps moving. The doctor stood there observing the lumps for a little bit longer, then went out of the room for a few minutes.
When he came back, he started to ask the woman a few questions. The questions were very straightforward and were things like where she traveled recently, if she had any contact with any animals or insects, etc. It turned out that the woman had indeed traveled somewhere in a rural area of Russia, and also noted that the chances of her being in contact and bitten by some insects were pretty high. While these were just general factors that the woman was able to recall about her trip that didn't solidify or prove anything, her answers were enough to convince the doctor what the problem might be. Since he was an eye doctor, not capable of carrying out the procedure he thought was necessary for her to undergo, he referred the woman to a skin specialist and had an emergency appointment booked for her. Because the doctor didn't want her to panic or risk jeopardizing the procedure, he didn't tell the woman about his theory as to what was wrong with her.
When she arrived at the skin specialist, they took her in to be examined right away. The doctor there took one look at the lumps on her face and poked at them a bit. The lumps began moving just like they were at the eye doctor's office the woman was at before. The doctor explained that due to her recent possible contact with mosquitos and other insects, there may be some sort of larva or worm type creature living under her skin. The woman was shocked and absolutely horrified at what she heard. The doctor asked her if she was ready to have emergency surgery so that whatever was under her skin could be removed before it has the chance to cause any serious health problems. The woman, of course, obliged and was ready to go.
