Is there an expectation for your colleagues and team members to take business trips?
Many of your LGBT colleagues will think twice before saying yes to travelling abroad for work.
Many will turn down business trips to countries where same-sex relationships are illegal or cultural norms are overtly repressive or dangerous, such as Russia and the United Arab Emirates.
For those colleagues that are not out at work, this can be an incredibly uncomfortable situation for them.
They don’t want to out themselves by talking to you about their concerns for travel.
And what about if they do go ahead with the trip. Fear of outing themselves to colleagues overseas, evading personal questions, socialising in potentially dangerous situations for them – all things to consider.
What do you have in place to support your LGBT employees (whether they are out at work or otherwise) with taking business trips abroad?
In this series I am sharing LGBT best practice for organisations.
